Housefire
A mother returned from a night shift to find that her three children and her boyfriend had been
killed after a series of explosions and a fire at their home.

Amanda Carter, 35, had finished work at a nearby nursing home yesterday when she was told by police
that an explosion at the semi-detached house shortly before midnight had blown the roof and the back
of the property off, and started a ferocious blaze.
Those inside, Mrs Carter's boyfriend, Roderick Hine, 44, and her children Samantha, 16,
Patricia, 10, and Marcus, seven, all died.

Officers said they believed that the explosions were started deliberately, but the house was so
badly damaged that investigators were not expected to get into it until today to remove the bodies.
Yesterday police arrested a local man in his 30s and appealed for witnesses concerning a man seen
running away from the house in Cheddleton, Staffs, as the blaze broke out.
Officers were last night studying CCTV pictures taken from a neighbour's garden which show the
moment the explosion happened, followed by at least two other blasts.
As neighbours rushed on to the street, witnesses described hearing the children screaming inside.
Neighbours tried to smash their way in through the windows but were beaten back by the heat and
smoke.
advertisementThe first of the emergency services arrived within four minutes but were unable to save
Mr Hine or the children.
Mr Hine's brother, Robert, said: "I was woken at midnight with a phone call from a
neighbour saying that Roderick's house was on fire. When I got there the house was completely
ablaze. Roderick's partner came back with us.
"She was distraught and a paramedic was brought back with her because of fears for her health.
The police officer in charge came to the house and said there had been three bodies located, and
then some time later that there had been a fourth body."
Det Chief Insp Dave Garrett, leading the investigation, said: "This is a devastating tragedy
for all involved. We have launched a major investigation. We don't yet know how the fire
started but we are treating it as suspicious."
Mr Hine worked as a welder at Bateman's factory in Cheddleton, an agricultural engineering firm
where Robert Hine is a director.
Mrs Carter, who is in her late 30s, moved into his house in Hillside Road last year after splitting
up with her husband, Mark, who is the children's father. Yesterday he was at home in nearby
Leek, where a friend said he was "in bits".
Residents said Mr Hine was a popular figure. Heather Johnson, a neighbour, said: "The house was
a complete inferno. Everybody was in tears and hugging each other. Rod Hine was a lovely man. He
always had a smile on his face. He loved motorbikes.
"Mandy is a lovely girl. I saw her go to work at 6pm, a few hours before the fire, and I waved
goodbye to her. I can't imagine anyone would have a grudge against them."
John Harvey, 30, one of Mr Hine's friends, said: "Roderick really looked after
Mandy's kids, especially Marcus. They were making a new life for themselves and now that has
been wiped out. A neighbour said he had tried to smash a window and could hear children
screaming."
Mr Harvey's wife, Joanne, who would baby-sit the children, added: "Marcus was a sweet,
adorable lad. Whenever he came round he would play with his cars or kick a ball around. Patricia was
gorgeous. She was very well spoken and liked to sit and read a book."
The Rev Simon Sutcliffe, of St Andrew's Methodist Church, said: "This has shaken the
community."

im really sorry there terrible thing shoul have never happened and the mothere shoul be looking forward to christmas with her family. i no its hard for you and u wont ever get over it i no how you feel i lost my sister but i dont no how your able to go on losing 4 people who mean so much to you. i hope you enjoy xmas and they will help make the days easier for you xxxxxxxxx
